Congratulations to Maria Godden on her tremendous achievements at the Irish Age Group Championships & Summer Open NAC July 15th-19th. She finished the weekend with gold in 100m backstroke with a time of 1:08.65, gold in the 200m backstroke with 2:29.17, both the fastest times ever achieved at this championships for the 12 and under age group. She then won silver in the 200m freestyle with a time of 2:16.53 and then bronze in the 100m freestyle on Sunday night with 1:03.58 after 4 long days of competitive swimming. The A Squad trained hard in their summer camp at Club Santa Lanzarote to deal with the expectation for this premier age grouped national swimming event of the year.
Maria started swimming at 6 weeks and began lessons with Vicky O’Donaghue in the Ormonde Hotel
aged 5. She joined Kilkenny Swimming Club aged 8 and was guided expertly by Breda Collins through the squads until having to wait until she was 11 to join the A squad.
She competed at Irish National Age Groups Division 2 aged 10 and made the final of the 100m
backstroke while in B squad.
She started training with the Kilkenny Swimming Club A squad at this time and has been tutored and encouraged by her coach John Duffy to selection for the Leinster Team this year and has competed at several national senior events. She made the semi final of the women’s 100m backstroke in April aged only 12 at the Irish National Open Swimming championships and has won commemorative medals for Leinster at the Ulster Age Groups in March and then a senior bronze medal in the 200m backstroke at the Leinster Open Championships. She won the trophy for the best overall Leinster girl age 12 and under with 4 individual golds and 2 silver medals, in the Leinster Age Groups Swimming Championship in May this year.
